Government
The government in Greece is parliamentary republic. This means that the executive branch drives its legitimacy from and is accountable to the legislature. Because they are a republican country, they support a strong government, and do not put much of their tax dollars into social programs. The official name of Greece is Hellenic Republic, and in the past it was called Hellenic State or Kingdom of Greece.
To gain citizenship in Greece, it must be by descendant, this means that you must have at least one parent who is a citizen. You can also gain citizenship if you have been a resident for at least 10 years.
The president of Greece is Katerina Sakellaropoulou. She is the first woman president of Greece and was elected on January 22, 2020. A new president is elected every 5 years and can be elected for a second term (10 years is the longest anyone can be president). Greece also has a prime minister. The prime minister is Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Each branch of the Greek government is responsible for different things. The executive branch is for the president and prime minister, the legislative branch has 300 members, and the judicial branch is responsible for civil, criminal, and administrative.
FlagThe flag of Greece is blue and white. The white cross represents Greek Orthodoxy (official religion of Greece), and the blue and white represents the water that Greece is surrounded by.
